Musculoskeletal Nursing

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will review musculoskeletal and integumentary structure and function (28.04, 28.05), identify signs and symptoms of diseases/disorders of the musculoskeletal and integumentary system (34.01), identify diagnostic tests and medications used in the treatment of musculoskeletal and integumentary diseases/disorders (34.02, 34.03), and identify nutritional needs of patients with musculoskeletal and integumentary diseases/disorders (34.04)

Unit I - Care of the Orthopedic Trauma Patient

Unit II - Care of the Patient with Bone and Joint Disorders

Unit III - Care of the Patient with Skin Disorders/Diseases

Unit 1:

Jeopardy Review:  jeepartyMS1.ppt

Know the different types of fractures - Simple( Closed) and Compound (Open) and the risks/complications associated with fractures.

Understand the difference between Closed Reduction and Open Reduction

Discuss the importance of a Neurovascular (CMS) check and how it is performed

Review basic traction, casting and use of assistive devices.  Crutch gaits need to be practiced. 

Teach the use of a walker including moving forward and moving backward.

Unit 2:

Differentiate between Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis.

Discuss dietary and lifestyle influence on Gout recurrance.

Knowledge of Hip Precautions is a must!!  both Posterior and Anterior.
